[ESCLUSIVA CPZ] Davide Rossi: 'Sto aiutando i Coldplay con gli arrangiamenti per il Superbowl'

Ciao Davide, è un po' che non chiacchieriamo insieme! Abbiamo appena visto una tua foto sul tuo profilo Instagram (che è poi l'immagine di questa news, ndr) con la quale descrivi come tu sia impegnato a 'scrivere – per i Coldplay - per il Superbowl ... Il tempo stringe!'. Cosa puoi dirci di questa nuova collaborazione con la band?
Ciao ragazzi, è vero che non parliamo da un po’ di tempo, ma è sempre un piacere ricevere vostre notizie! Sono ovviamente sempre molto grato e lusingato per il vostro interesse nel mio lavoro. Per quello che riguarda la frase sul mio profilo Instagram, “il tempo stringe!”. Questo perché ci stiamo avvicinando ormai alla imminente deadline della performance del Super Bowl con i ragazzi e c’è ancora molto lavoro da fare. Questa collaborazione con i Coldplay è completamente una nuova esperienza nel nostro modo di collaborare. Di solito io lavoro principalmente sui dischi. A parte qualche comparsata con Chris e la band dal vivo (avvenimenti più unici che rari), non ho mai partecipato alla produzione di un evento live vero e proprio della band, quindi immaginerai la sorpresa, molto gradita fra l’altro, quando mi è stato richiesto di poter aiutare loro con gli arrangiamenti per l’evento del Super Bowl - che si terrà a San Francisco il 7 Febbraio prossimo - sul quale sto lavorando ormai da più di due mesi e sono coinvolto nella preparazione sia dell’arrangiamento musicale sia delle prove che prevedono la performance dei Coldplay e dei loro ospiti.

In un video registrato nel backstage degli eventi di preparazione al Superbowl, abbiamo notato come si stia predisponendo un palco che permetta una visione 'uniforme' a 360 gradi, alcune interazioni grafiche davvero interessanti e una performance che la band dovrebbe regalare ai fans in soli 12 minuti. L'intento è quello di sublimare l'intera carriera nel gruppo in una dozzina di giro di lancette. Quanto sarà difficile per lo staff organizzare tutto a puntino?
Onestamente, quando ho visto il programma e l’enormità della macchina organizzativa, mi è venuto un mal di testa non indifferente... un’organizzazione ed una crew di lavoro davvero mai vista. Penso che anche per loro, abituati a riempire stadi nel mondo, questo sia uno step di una grandezza incredibile, un punto importante e definitivo per la loro carriera. Il fatto che mi abbiano chiesto di aiutarli in modo così importante a livello musicale non può altro che rendermi umile ed allo stesso tempo orgoglioso di un rapporto di grande fiducia da parte loro nei miei confronti.

Un'immagine che mostra quello che sarà il palco calcato dai Coldplay durante lo show al Superbowl: si tratta di una disposizione che permetterà di godere di una visione particolare dagli spalti e, ad ogni componente della band, di essere vicinissimo ai propri fans e agli spettatori presenti allo spettacolo

Nel video, si parla di una preparazione di ben 6 mesi per questo enorme appuntamento. Sei stato al centro del progetto fin dall'inizio o sei subentrato dalla panchina dando il tuo decisivo contributo?
In realtà, sono stato chiamato dalla panchina da circa due mesi... Le partite di calcio dei Coldplay non sono mai di 90 minuti ma ne durano sempre qualcuno di più... ed il recupero è sempre molto abbondante!

Nello stesso video ti abbiamo visto, anche se di spalle, abbracciare Chris che sembra averti ringraziato di cuore per il tuo lavoro. Come è cambiato il tuo rapporto con lui (e anche con gli altri della band) negli ultimi anni? Come si è evoluto il vostro lavoro insieme in studio?
Beh, c’è sempre un grande rispetto reciproco ed anche un’amicizia che con gli anni si sviluppa sempre di più. Come collaboratore, sia dei Coldplay, sia di tutti gli altri artisti con cui lavoro ormai da più di 15 anni nel music business internazionale, sto imparando a fare la mia parte il più efficientemente e professionalmente possibile. È sicuramente un privilegio ed un dono il poter fare un lavoro che si ama totalmente e che fa parte del tuo DNA, nel mio caso da quando ero veramente un bambino. E farlo con artisti di tale fama internazionale lo è ovviamente ancora di più. I Coldplay, così come i Goldfrapp ed i Verve, rimangono per me dei capitoli importantissimi nella mia carriera musicale, perché sono, oltre che esperienze lavorative ed artistiche di livello assoluto, anche collaborazioni con persone veramente speciali. Ovviamente bisogna sempre tenere i piedi per terra e mai dare le cose per scontato, ma diciamo che ogni volta che vedo Chris, Jonny, Guy, Will, Phil ma anche Rik, Dan e compagnia bella è un po’ come tornare in famiglia la domenica a fare il pranzo con tanto di tarallucci e vino per tutti! (non so perché ho menzionato i tarallucci e vino, ma va bene così!)

Sei d'accordo con noi nel ritenere che il Superbowl sarà il punto di svolta della carriera dei Coldplay? Le motivazioni che dai alla tua risposta sono collegate solo all'importanza dell'evento o può esserci dell'altro?
Sicuramente è una consacrazione... non conosco un TV show più grande ed importante del Super Bowl a livello mondiale. Questi appuntamenti sono sempre molto importanti nella carriera di un artista o di una band. Confermano che stai facendo la cosa che ami al meglio delle tue possibilità e ti danno la forza ed un incentivo a proseguire nel cammino artistico che ti sei prefissato.

L'impatto visivo ed emozionale che avrà il palco dei Coldplay al Superbowl sarà qualcosa di totalmente partecipativo e coinvolgente

Senza dubbio, l'esibizione dei Coldplay al Superbowl trainerà anche le vendite del loro nuovo album, A Head Full Of Dreams, al quale hai lavorato. Come vedi questo lp nel contesto del panorama musicale internazionale degli ultimi anni, ma soprattutto in quello della comparazione con i loro lavori precedenti?
Devo dire che trovo il loro nuovo album un lavoro molto solido, di qualità e veramente ben fatto. È sempre più difficile al giorno d’oggi mantenere un livello eccelso ed una rilevanza artistica definita. Penso che loro stiano facendo bene nella loro strada, seguendo il loro istinto, lavorando sodo ed i frutti si vedono a mio avviso.

Il gioco di luci e l'atmosfera che la presenza dei Coldplay al Superbowl sarà in grado di infondere in ciascun (tele)spettatore renderanno l'evento 'una consacrazione' per la band, secondo Davide

Qual è, secondo te, il brano che strumentalmente e dal punto di vista della produzione in studio, risulta essere il più innovativo, originale e riuscito di A Head Full Of Dreams?
Non lo so... tendo a non ascoltare un lavoro appena fatto per almeno qualche anno! Al momento sono legato ad Amazing Day perché a mio avviso è abbastanza diversa come canzone dal resto del loro repertorio... una canzone che ha un feeling molto old school anni 50 (almeno per me!).

Ci piace pensare che tu possa essere l'”usato sicuro” della band, ovvero una delle poche persone di talento a cui ricorrere per poter ottenere un risultato considerevole sotto tutti i punti di vista. Quanto è importante la fiducia e l'apprezzamento di Chris, Jonny, Will e Guy per poter creare la base di nuovi lavori, non solo 'per' loro ma anche per accrescere le tue esperienze musicali personali?
Si... apparentemente appartengo all’usato sicuro e finora non ancora rottamato! Sono sempre estremamente grato per tutte le opportunità che si presentano. Già fare musica è incredibile, poi farlo come lavoro, con i Coldplay e tutti gli artisti con cui sto collaborando ed ho collaborato negli ultimi 15/20 anni... cosa posso chiedere di più? Tutti doni che aiutano a continuare ed a migliorare il lavoro e l’attitudine alla composizione, all’arrangiamento, all’arte e alla musica, per me filosofia di vita.

Hi Davide, it's been a while, you know, since we talked. We’ve recently seen a pic on your Instagram account captioned “Writing for the Super Bowl... Time’s ticking!”. What can you reveal about your collaboration with the band?
Hi guys! You’re right, we don't have a chat since long time now, but it’s always a pleasure hearing from you! I’m obviously grateful for your interest in my work. For what concerns that caption on my Instagram profile “time is ticking!” because we are approaching to Coldplay’s performance at the next Super Bowl and much work has still to be done. This collaboration with Coldplay is a completely new experience in our way of collaborating. Usually I work mainly on the records. Except from some (very rare) live appearance with Chris and the rest of the band, I’ve never took part in a Coldplay’s live gig before. So you can imagine the surprise, much appreciated, when they ask me to give an hand with the arrangements for the Super Bowl - that will be held in San Francisco next 7th of February – on which I’ve been working for two months. I’m involved both in the musical arrangements and in the rehearsals of the band and their guests before the show.

In a “behind the scene” video that anticipates Super Bowl we noticed that the band is setting a “360° stage”, with an interesting graphics, for just 12 minutes of show. The aim is to sublimate the entire career of the band in a short amount of time. How much will it be difficult to manage everything perfectly?
Honestly, when I first saw the programme and the huge organizational process behind, I had an headache! Something never seen before. In my opinion this will be a milestone in their career, even though they used to fill the stadium. The fact that they asked me to help for this show makes me feel humble and proud at the same time of our relationship and of their great confidence towards me.

In the video we can hear of a six months preparation for this great show. Have you been involved in the project since the very start or have you made your entry into the field in the middle of the match?
Actually I’ve been involved for two months. Coldplay’s football match always last much more than 90 minutes and the injury time is usually larger than the normal!

In the same video we saw an hug between you and Chris, as if he had thanked you of your work. How your relationship with him (and also with the other members of the band) has evolved in the last years? And what about your work together in the studio?
Well, there is always a great mutual respect and even friendship that develops over the years more and more. As a 15 years music collaborator, both for Coldplay and for other artists at an international level, I am learning to do my part as efficiently and professionally as possible. It is certainly a privilege and a gift being able to do the work that you love and that is part of your Dna - in my case since I was really a child, and doing it with artists of such international renown it is obviously even more rewarding. Coldplay, as well as Goldfrapp and The Verve, are a very important chapter in my musical career, because they represent, as well as an high level work experience, even a collaboration with very special people. Of course we must always keep our feet on the ground and never take things for granted, but I can say that every time I see Chris, Jonny, Guy, Will, but also Rik, Phil and Dan and the rest of them it’s a bit like staying with your family on Sunday lunch with a lot of “tarallucci” (typical Italian biscuits, ndr) and wine for everyone! (I don’t know why I mentioned” tarallucci and wine”, but that's okay!)

Do you agree with us in thinking that the Super Bowl will be the turning point in Coldplay’s career? The reasons behind your response are linked only to the importance of the event or there is something more?
Surely it is a consecration ... I don’t know any TV show that could be larger and more important than the Super Bowl worldwide. These appointments are always an huge step in the career of an artist or a band. They are a recognition that you're doing the thing you love at the best of your ability and they give you the strength and an incentive to continue on the path that have been set.

Undoubtedly, the performance of Coldplay at the Super Bowl will also drive the sales of their new album, A Head Full Of Dreams, on which you worked too. How do compare this last LP with their previous works and with the international music scenario?
I must say that I find their new record to be very solid, high-quality and really well done. It is increasingly difficult nowadays to maintain unmatched levels and a defined cultural identity at the same time. I think they are doing well in their way, following their instincts, working hard and the results can be seen in my opinion.

In A Head Full Of Dreams what is, in your opinion, the most innovative, original and successful song, from the point of view of the instruments and the studio work behind?
I do not know ... I tend not to listen to a job I’ve just made for at least a few years! I appreciated Amazing Day because I think it is quite different from the rest of their songs... a song that has a very “fifties” feeling (at least for me!).

We like to think that you could be the ''certified pre-owned" one of the band: one of the few talented people to trust in order to get a considerable achievement from all points of view. How important is the confidence and the appreciation by Chris, Jonny, Guy and Will to create the basis for new works, not only for them but also to increase your personal musical experience?
Yes, I am apparently belong to “certified pre-owned” category and so far not yet scrapped! I am always very grateful for all the opportunities that arise. Making music is incredible, then doing it as a job, with Coldplay and all the artists with whom I'm working and I have worked over the last 15-20 years ... what else can I ask for? These are all gifts that help me in continuing and improving the work and the attitude to composition, arranging, art and music, for me a way of life.
